A Grant That Goes the Distance

Midwest Food Bank ground breakingAt Midwest Food Bank, every donated dollar has the potential to go much further than its face value. Through donated food, dedicated volunteers, and highly efficient operations, the organization can turn one dollar into approximately $35 worth of food for neighbors in need.

In 2026, Midwest Food Bank received a $25,000 grant from Kaleo to procure and distribute 10 semi-truckloads of food—enough to provide approximately 300,000 meals. The grant covered transportation and delivery costs, an essential part of the work since moving millions of dollars’ worth of donated food requires trucks, fuel, equipment, warehouse space, and carefully coordinated systems.

With less than 1% of its expenses devoted to administration, Midwest Food Bank works diligently to put every gift to meaningful use.

Sometimes that impact is seen in an urgent phone call.

Recently, one of Midwest Food Bank’s partner agencies called with a serious problem: its food pantry was scheduled to open on Thursday, but its shelves were empty. Midwest Food Bank staff quickly responded. The agency arrived with a trailer, which was filled with food so the pantry could reopen as planned.

That ability to respond quickly is especially important for the hundreds of local ministries that depend on Midwest Food Bank.

The impact becomes even more personal through the connections among Kaleo’s ministry partners.

One woman who had been working in local strip clubs began receiving services through Unconditional and participating in its programs. At the time, she was eating only every other day so her daughter would have enough food.

Unconditional connected her with a food pantry supplied by Midwest Food Bank. With consistent access to groceries, both mother and daughter now have enough to eat each day.

That food provides more than nourishment. It gives the mother greater stability and allows Unconditional’s team to continue building a relationship with her and connecting her with additional programs and services.

Stories like hers illustrate the strength of ministry partnership: Midwest Food Bank meets an immediate physical need while equipping other organizations to provide relationships, encouragement, and hope.

And the reach of that work continues to grow. A few years ago, Midwest Food Bank’s Indiana division distributed approximately $27 million worth of food annually. This year, it is on track to distribute more than $70 million worth of food.

A Word to Kaleo Givers

“Your gift has a big impact. A $25,000 gift is being multiplied by 35, allowing us to turn that into a lot of food.”

— Todd Greenwood, Executive Director, Midwest Food Bank Indiana

Today, the organization serves more than 230 agencies in 52 counties, with another 60 organizations waiting for the opportunity to become partners.

As demand increases, Midwest Food Bank is preparing for the future. The organization recently broke ground on a new $13 million facility that will expand its capacity to receive, store, and distribute food—and ultimately serve more families throughout Indiana.

Kaleo’s support has helped Midwest Food Bank respond to growing demand. Through your generosity, semi-truckloads of food reach communities in need, food pantries stay open, and families facing hunger receive practical help and renewed hope. It’s a powerful example of how collective generosity can extend far beyond a single gift.

Prayer Focus

Midwest Food Bank invites Kaleo’s giving community to pray for a continued supply of food to meet growing needs; for more volunteers to help carry out the ministry; and for the remaining funds needed to complete its new $13 million facility.
